Frequently Asked Questions

For PrEP Users

What is PrEP?

PrEP is short for pre-exposure prophylaxis. It is a medication taken by someone who is HIV-negative to prevent contracting HIV. PrEP is safe and effective. Currently, the most widely available form of PrEP is a once-daily oral pill. A vaginal ring has also been shown to be effective, and other forms of PrEP are currently being studied. PrEP is safe and well-tolerated for people of every sex, sexuality, and gender expression.

PrEP is not legally available in my country. Is there still a way to access PrEP?

This will depend on your country. In some countries, there are ways to order PrEP medication online and have it shipped to you. There are resources and organizations to help guide you. We have a layer on the Global PrEP Provider Map for such services – “PrEP Information / Resources”. You can also find more resources and information specific to your country on our Resources page.

There is fear of violence or retribution in my country if a person is seen accessing or perceived to be taking PrEP or HIV-related medication. What services are available in this case?
